Help File

Q: The 2.85 Help file doesn't work.

A: We now use the Microsoft HTML Help system.Download it here, or view the On-lineDocumentation.

Hang-Up

Q: I am running version 6.0 or better on my Ascend Max(2.0 + on a TNT), but Hang-up still doesn't work!?!

A: Hang-up works by modifying the user's activestatus and changing it to inactive. This is done by using SNMP write priveleges. Make sure that SNMP write is enabled on yourMax. Also, make sure that you use the SNMP write community in the community field of MaxStat.

SNMPSecurity

Q: I read somewhere that SNMP is very insecure.Does this mean that MaxStat is insecure?

A: SNMP is only as insecure as the administratorlets it be. MaxStat uses the standard Microsoft SNMP libraries, so it is only as secure as your network. Just like any internetservice such as WWW or FTP, you should take precautions.

Your SNMP read and write communities should be difficult to guess. Change them often, and do not leave them at default.

Blocking/filtering TCP port 161 on your backbone router will not let in SNMP requests from the outside internet.

Ascend Max/TNTs and Lucent Portmasters allow for SNMP security by limiting which hosts can actually contact the Maxen for SNMP requests. This would mean that an intruder would have to spoof an IP on your local network to gain access to your RAS units.

Note: Be especially careful of your SNMPwrite community. If someone has access to the SNMP write community, they can modify almost anything on a MAX or TNT...even reboot it!

LucentPortmaster COMOS Version

Q: I am trying to get MaxStat to work withmy Livingston PM 2 or 3 unit, but it doesn't do anything. Just hangs like it is looking for something not there. Is there aCOMOS version I need to have to use MaxStat with the PM series?

A: Yes, you need to be running COMOS version 3.7.xor greater to use MaxStat with the PM series.

AscendXMIT Speed Column

Q: Why doesn't the XMIT column show thecorrect transmit speeds on my Max? All I get are numbers like 1, 37, 128,etc.

A: Not every version of the Ascend OS supportsthe transmit speed option. You need to be running one of the following releases:

Ascend Max series: Ascend OS version 6.0+
TNT Series: Ascend OS version 2.x+

Error inWSOCK32.DLL

Q: After installing MaxStat, it doesn't run. Itgives me "Error Starting Program - The WSOCK32.DLL file cannot start".

A: Replace the WSOCK32.DLL file with a newerversion from another Windows 95 machine, or get the Windows 95 Windows Sockets 2.0 update from Microsoft. ClickHere.
